Father’s Day is still a week away but as early as today however, my brother and brother in law have received messages of greetings from various friends.. The reason for the confusion maybe because in other countries, they celebrate it every 2nd Sunday of June.
Based on my readings, there are even countries that celebrate it in a totally different month and date. Thailand for instance celebrate Father’s Day during the birthday of their King. So whoever is the current King, his birthday becomes the Father’s Day celebration. In Taiwan, it is celebrated on August 8. In Russia, it’s on February 23. In Australia, it is every 1st Sunday of September. In the Philippines, we celebrate it on the 3rd Sunday of June along with the majority of other countries.
It’s common knowledge that it was the idea of a woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington that started this all.
Father’s Day celebration was born in memory and gratitude of a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother’s Day. She wanted to honor her father William Jackson Smart who raised her as a single Dad after her mother died. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Since her father was born in June, then she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
In our family, it has been a tradition to make both Father and Mother’s Day a bit special. However last year’s celebration (2008) was a sad one for me. It was the first year that we were not able to celebrate it with my Dad as he passed away August 2007. I just blogged about it at http://augustaffair.blogsome.com/2008/07/08/fathers-day/.
As early as last week, I have been hunting around for little gifts that I can give to the “Fathers” in my family. I will continue my hunt this week and will post the picture of whatever I will find in my next post.
To all the kids, I suggest that you strive to make this day a special one for your fathers. Time is really fleeting. We will never know how much time we still have so let us make the most out of it.
To all the fathers “Happy Father’s Day”.
